I’m pretty sure it’s no secret, but I love to travel. And I mean, I LOVE to travel. Traveling for me is like a drug. (Am I allowed to say that?) I start to crave it. I get such a rush from traveling & if I go more than a month or two without getting on an airplane I get restless. I start googeling cities, flight schedules and hotels into the wee hours of the night. And more often than not at any given moment I have at least 5 international trips on my radar. It’s bad. Or great. However you want to look it. All that to say, I love that I get to choose where my job takes me. BUT….there is a downside to it. Part of my responsibility when we go abroad is doing whatever it takes to ensure I’m getting the shots & images that I need to go home with. Especially if I have clients requesting specific images. Sometimes that means forgoing something touristy, staying up late, or waking up in the middle of the night to go out and shoot in unobstructed streets.

While in Rome a few months ago I knew that I needed a night shot of the Coliseum. However with it being such an iconic figure of Roman landscape, it’s pretty much a zoo at all hours of the day. Except between the hours of 3am and 5am. So, what do we do but set our alarm for 2:45am, have our hotel concierge call us a cab, and off we go to shoot in the pouring rain!

The tricky part about shooting in a downpour is not keeping your body dry but keeping your equipment safe! In the case of our predawn Coliseum shoot, I’ve never seen anything more hilarious & I so wish we had a photo to capture our madness: My sweet (and completely soaked!) husband holding the umbrella over my head, my camera & tripod for an hour just so his crazy wife could get her one shot. What love. And yet that’s what makes it an adventure & one of the many reasons this shot was worth the treck through the soaked streets of Rome.

It’s amazing how much better life is after a good night’s sleep; and I think there’s a reason things look so much worse when you haven’t had it. This is mine & Ryan’s fourth trip to Europe since we’ve been married & I tell you honestly there are not words to describe how wonderful it was to finally sleep that first night in Rome. –Nine hours of sleep in fact. I’m not sure if the amazingly spectacular Hotel Eden’s pillow top beds and high thread count sheets were, in fact, made by angels or not. Either way, a good sleep & a good glass of wine can give you a renewed perspective…and could quite possibly solve a host of the world’s toughest dilemmas!

Following a remarkable breakfast overlooking the entire city from the Eden’s rooftop terrace, we left to get lost in the city. Although we’d both been to Rome on our own a few times before, it’s always fun exploring a city with your best friend in one hand & your 5D in the other! A couple of Europe trips ago we came up with the phrase “sight-shooting”, which I think perfectly suits us! All of our exploring is done through a lens. And while it’s always great to get those famous landmark shots that are unique to each city, so much of the fun (for me at least) is finding those little hidden gems in the details. Whether it’s a quiet little cobblestone street off the beaten bath, a memorable meal or maybe even just a different perspective, I think that’s what makes travel photography so great. You can visit a place a dozen times and still manage to find new shots or still not even get the one you want. One of my biggest inspirations of all times is a husband & wife travel photography duo called Scanlan. They once shared with me that sometimes it will take them four or five different trips to a destination before they get that ONE shot that they want; a lifestyle that requires an unbelievable amount of practice, dedication & patience. I think about that concept often, especially when I’m traveling abroad to shoot. I sometimes find myself getting frustrated or anxious about getting “the shot”. Whether it’s the lighting that’s unfavorable, bad weather or a scene that’s over crowded with people, I sometimes start slipping into the mindset that I get one chance to get it right and one chance only. And sometimes that’s true. But more often than not we have more second chances than we realize, we just fail to see the grace of the moment. Sometimes that moment requires us to take a step back, take a deep breath, readjust our focus & wait for the distraction to pass through the view finder. More often than not, when you do that, things will look a little differently.

Thanks again for sharing in our Journey. Up next on the blog: shooting at the Coliseum at 4am in the pouring rain! Till next time…

Everyone knows that traveling of any kind requires a certain amount of patience & flexibility. But what happens when your so-called plans are completely thrown out the window & everything is turned completely upside down? A few days ago Ryan & I left sunny San Diego for two weeks in Europe. We left with the assumption that our plans would go, well, according to our plans. Looking back now, however, we can see that there was purpose even in the midst of chaos. After 3 hours of mechanical delays at JFK our Delta flight to Rome was canceled, which then sent 300+ very irritated passengers literally scrambling to find another flight- any flight- to mainland Europe. Thanks to our guardian angels at Kahala Travel and the grace of God, were able to get on an Iberia flight to Madrid. Once we made it to Madrid we then took a flight to Rome, where upon arrival we were informed that our luggage was missing with no record of it anywhere. At this point we’d been traveling well over 24 hours & all we wanted to do was get to our hotel & take a shower. Instead after a few hours of making phone calls & filing lost luggage claims, we left the airport with nothing else to do but wait & hope for the best. And while our first reaction wasn’t exactly one of enthusiasm, we both knew that there was a bigger lesson to be learned…one that went beyond our agendas or control. God was giving us a gift in learning what it was like to live, very simply, with the clothes on our backs; and quite frankly in a way that I wasn’t used to traveling. So for the next 2 and ½ days we became experts at sink washing & blow dryer drying, re-wearing the same clothes we’d left home in. –And with the day of our arrival falling on a national holiday, most stores would be closed till Monday. Buying new clothes was pretty much not an option. Yet in the midst of it all we were able (most of the time) to keep our perspective, knowing that we were had each other and (almost!) more importantly –we had our camera equipment!

We’ve since been reunited with our bags & can now look back & laugh at how for the first 3 days of our trip we are both wearing the exact same thing in every picture. And of course, the image of both us in our matching size XL undershirts & shorts from our amazingly handy little Iberia toiletries bags is priceless. Having to make do with whatever we could find & not worry about what we didn’t have was in a way, surprisingly refreshing; you can’t be tied down to what you don’t have. We are excited now for all the amazing destinations through Italy, Greece & Turkey that are ahead of us. After catching up on some much needed sleep & working through this jet lag I hope to be able to write more and post some of the amazing photos we’ve been able to capture thus far!! Tomorrow we head to Istanbul, which should be absolutely fascinating!

So today, take a minute to reflect on what’s going on at this moment. Can you find simplicity in the midst of chaos? Perhaps there’s a bigger purpose at work around you. Thanks for taking the time to read about the exciting start to our trip & I hope you’ll follow us through this amazing Journey we’re on.

Everywhere you go there’s just so much natural beauty. It was a travel photographer’s paradise. And there’s something so freeing about being in the great outdoors, shooting in the wind and the beauty of natural light. Then spending time on Victoria Island I felt like I was transported back to Europe again; it was interesting how much that town reminded me of a minature Dublin. I would really reccomend a lovely weekend getaway to this darling little Canadian harbor town! Thank you for sharing in our Journey today.

I know I’m waaay behind in postings these days and have come to the realization that I just won’t be able to get to posting all my shoots, but this one was just too beautiful to not share. Josh & Jaclyn got married at the Dallas Arboretum on a beautiful, springtime-in-Texas evening & everything about their day was so gorgeous. I’m really growing to love shooting Southern weddings, they have such a different feel than California weddings; they just seem to know how to pull out all the stops. It’s all about the littlest details, hundreds of guests and lots of big hugs and how y’all doing’s. I hope you enjoy a little peek at their beautiful day. A special thanks to my favourite second shooter, Dallas-based photographer Heather Thorne, for all your help. Josh & Jaclyn, all the best as you start your Journey together.

There’s something so serene and peaceful about winter. It’s interesting how nature’s darkest and sleepiest time still manages to exude so much beauty. Such is the beauty of God’s promises even in the midst of the bleakest moments. Be well in your Journey today, in whatever place it may find you. Good or bad. Take a moment to acknowledge the beauty around you.

it’s been a busy end of summer for us. lots of weddings, lots of travel, and of course, lots and lots of photos to sort through! my hope is to post some of those in the next few days as i catch up on work, jet lag and sleep. ryan and i are currently in deer valley, utah, our second home, enjoying the GORGEOUS fall colours and the cool autumn climate! –quite a change from the warm and tropical climate of hawaii we were in just 4 days ago! i will try to post some photos from that soon too.

if you’ve never had the chance to catch fall in its most colourful corners of our beautiful nation, you really must put it on your to-do list! having grown up in southern california, you don’t experience seasons like you do in other parts of the country and world. i really feel i’ve missed out on autumn’s breathtaking and fleeting splendor! until now. never in my life have i seen colours like this! it’s so majestic and so, almost…holy. it really takes your breath away. our God is so artistic in His creation.

here are a few frames i shot early this morning. enjoy a glimpse of heaven. be well in your Journey.
